If you are unable to participate in the London Marathon, you may have the option to defer your entry to the following year. This guide explains who is eligible for a deferral, how to request one, and what happens after your deferral is accepted.
Deferral Eligibility
Ballot Entries: If you have a UK or international ballot entry, you can defer your place for any reason.
Good For Age & Championship Entries: You can only defer if you are pregnant or postpartum. Injuries and other reasons do not qualify for a deferral.
Charity & Club Entries: You must contact your charity or running club directly, as they have their own deferral policies.
How to Request a Deferral
1. Wait for Deferrals to Open
The London Marathon organisers will email all eligible participants when deferrals open.
You can submit your deferral request through the Manage My Booking page.
2. Submit Your Deferral Request
Log into your Manage My Booking account.
Select the Deferral Request option and follow the instructions.
Choose the reason for your deferral (if required).
3. Confirmation of Deferral
Once approved, your entry will be marked as deferred.
You will not be able to run in the current year’s event.
You will receive an email confirming your deferral status.
What Happens After You Defer?
Next Year’s Entry Claim: A few months after the current year’s event (usually in April), you will receive an email with a link to claim your entry for the following year.
Payment Required: You must pay the entry fee again to secure your place.
Entry Deadline: You must claim your deferred place within the deadline provided in the email.
